Nigeria’s bustling megacity and economic powerhouse, Lagos has once again made history, becoming the first African city to host the prestigious E1 Series, the world’s first all-electric powerboat championship. The E1 Lagos Grand Prix marks a defining moment not only for the city but for the entire African continent, placing Lagos among global destinations like Monaco, London, and Venice, Jeddah and Doha that have hosted the cutting-edge racing event.
The E1 Series is the world’s first electric raceboat competition, created to revolutionize marine motorsport through sustainable innovation designed to promote clean energy, technological advancement, and environmental stewardship.The series brings together top global racers and engineers to demonstrate how speed and sustainability can coexist on water.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who described the event as a milestone for the state’s evolving tourism and blue economy sectors, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his goodwill message and reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to sustainability. “This speaks to the future we are building — one of clean energy, innovation, and opportunities for our young people,hosting the E1 Lagos GP reflects Lagos’s growing status as a global city embracing new opportunities in technology, climate innovation, and tourism”, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos stated.
The event not only highlights the state’s vast aquatic potential — with over 22% of its landmass covered by water — but also reinforces its ambition to become Africa’s hub for blue economy development, renewable energy adoption, and marine tourism.
With the E1 Series making waves on the Atlantic shores of Lagos, the city cements its reputation as a leader in innovation, sustainability, and resilience — boldly charting a course toward a cleaner and more prosperous future for Africa.
